Installation

Requirements

ZHSI requires Java, from v2.0.0, ZHSI also uses JavaFX for the UI, so best would be to use Java version8 which still ships with JavaFX support build in, but if you run Java version11 for example, please make sure you also install JavaFX (more info here: https://openjfx.io/openjfx-docs/#install-javafx)

At time of writing, Java version8 can be downloaded here : https://java.com/en/download/manual.jspMake sure you install the 64-bit version

ZHSI has been tested and developed with Java8

ZHSI prior to v2.1.0 requires the ExtPlane plug-in to be installed, but from v2.1.0 and newer uses the ZHSI plugin, more info below under the Plug-in section

ZCDU

ZCDU comes in 3 formats, Windows,MAC and .jar file.

At time of writing it still requires the ExtPlane plugin, whereas ZHSI uses its own ZHSI plugin, so make sure those are installed first. In future, the CDU displays will be integrated in to ZHSI and then it will only require the ZHSI plugin.

ZHSI

ZHSI only comes in a .jar file.

Running the jar file

You should just be able to double-click it and if Java is installed correctly, it should open. If you OS does not allocate enough 'max memory' to ZHSI, then I recommend to at least set the maximum heap memory size to 2G, so you can run it from the command line like this:

-Xmx2G means a maximum memory heap size of 2G. You can also make it 3G or 4G depending on the amount of ram. The terrain tiles are the ones that uses the most memory, so if you want to save on memory, only include the tiles you normally fly at, see Terrain Data (EGPWS Directory) or the Status tab in ZHSI.

Plug-in

The Windows,MAC and Linux (untested) plug-in is included in this repo only for ZHSI version 2.1.0 and later

Link:https://gitlab.com/sum1els737/zhsi-releases/tree/master/zhsi-plugin

for ZHSI versions 2.0.1 and earlier, please still use the ExtPlane plugin

Link:https://gitlab.com/sum1els737/zhsi-releases/tree/master/extplane-plugin

You can confirm the plugin version, by either looking at the X-Plane Log.txt file (search for ZHSI), via the following dataref: zhsi/plugin/version or in the Plugin menu under X-Plane.

The plugin creates a TCP service listening on port 52000 when X-Plane starts up. If you are running a Windows firewall on your X-Plane PC, then you might have to allow X-Plane or TCP port 52000 through this firewall in order for ZHSI to connect successfully, for example:

The plugin is fork of ExtPlane (scaled) down, so special thanks to Ville Ranki (https://github.com/vranki/ExtPlane) who wrote the original plugin.

X-Plane IP Address

Under the Config tab, you are required to specify the IP address of your X-Plane PC.

running ZHSI on the same PC as X-PlaneIf you are running ZHSI on the same PC as X-Plane, then you can leave it as 127.0.0.1

running ZHSI on the remote networked PCHowever, if you are running ZHSI on a remote networked PC (wired network recommended), then you have to put in the X-Plane PC IP address in this field, if you don't know what it is, then you can look in X-Plane, under Settings -> Network

Nav Data (X-Plane Directory)

ZHSI creates its own DB files for Airports (zhsi_apt.dat) and Runways (zhsi_rwy.dat) by reading the default apt.dat file in X-Plane (Resourcesdefault scenerydefault apt datEarth nav data). It also scans the AIRAC data files (normally in Custom Data) , that is why it needs to know where you X-Plane folder is, so that means you have to create a network share of your X-Plane installation folder and use that if running ZHSI on a networked PC.

if ZHSI is running on the same PC ad X-Plane then you can just point to you X-Plane folder under the Config tab.

if ZHSI is running on a remote networked PC and you have problems creating a network share or having issues, since v2 of ZHSI, these files can now be read locally (optional)

On first run, ZHSI will create a new folder called zhsi_nav_data in the same location as ZHSI jar file. This folder will be used to store its own DB files mentioned above, but you can also copy your X-Plane default apt.dat file and your AIRAC data in there and ZHSI will read them from there instead of over the network.

So if you want to let ZHSI read the data locally make sure you have the following files copied over from X-Plane (also make sure when you update X-Plane or AIRAC data, to copy these files over again)

  • apt.dat file needs to be copied from X-Plane (Resourcesdefault scenerydefault apt datEarth nav data)
  • earth_awy.dat file is normally located in X-Plane (Custom Data)
  • earth_fix.dat file is normally located in X-Plane (Custom Data)
  • earth_nav.dat file is normally located in X-Plane (Custom Data)

So, your zhsi_nav_data folder should have these files in, if you prefer to read them locally.

note: if you run this on a low end machine which will only show the EICAS or Standby instruments, then no Nav data is required obviously, so don't worry about this step. leave the X-Plane directory and zhsi_nav_data folder empty.

Terrain Data (EGPWS Directory)

In order for the Terrain Radar to work, you need to download a copy of all the Elevation tiles from (https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/gltiles.html).

Xpanel For Mac Download

Direct download link : (https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/DATATILES/elev/all10g.zip)

important: These files are read into memory at each start, so it needs memory. If you run it on a lower end PC, then you can only include the tiles for the areas you fly in, you don't need all 17 tiles. Check the first link above for the specific tiles for you region.

Once extracted, it will or should create a directory called 'all10' with 17 files inside, named from a10g to p10g. In ZHSI (settings tab, called EGPWS directory), you need to browse and SELECT this 'all10' folder (or whatever you called it), as ZHSI will then check if the 17 files exist within, if so, it will save the settings. The name should also turn Green if saved successfully. Restart ZHSI to generate the data and Terrain should then be working.

PLEASE DO NOT compare the Terrain radar to the existing Terrain plugin that exists for Zibo737. We use completely different data sources and possibly different logic as well. I use the following logic as found in the 737 FCOM:

  • Dotted red: Terrain more than 2,000 feet above airplane’s current altitude
  • Dotted amber: Terrain 500 feet (250 feet with gear down) below to 2,000 feet above the airplane’s current altitude
  • Dotted green: Terrain from 2,000 feet below to 500 feet (250 feet with gear down) below the airplane’s current altitude( Black: No significant terrain
  • Terrain more than 2,000 feet below airplane altitude or within 200 feet of nearest airport runway elevation does not show.

note: At the moment, Oceans (water) are not displayed on the Terrain Display.

Weather Radar

I only have XP11, so not sure if this is different for older versions, but in order ZHSI to receive weather from X-Plane, you have to do the following (in X-Plane):

Xpanel For Mac Download Cnet

  • Go Settings -> Network -> click on iPHONE, iPAD and EXTERNAL APPS
  • Check the box that says 'Use Control Pad as an IOS'
  • In the IP Address field, type in the IP address of the PC that runs ZHSI, if on the same machine, you can use 127.0.0.1
  • Click on Done

If you need multiple PCs on your network to receive this data, they all need to be on the same network, then you can add the broadcast address of your network, for example, if your network is 192.168.1.xxx, you can use : 192.168.1.255 in X-Plane, and all devices on the 192.168.1.xxx network will receive the UDP packets.

Annunciators

Since v2.2.0, ZHSI includes an annunciator window (via the Annunciators section)

Instead of me adding every single annunciator, I have created the ability for you to add annunciators yourself.

In the same directory as ZHSI, there should be a file called ZHSI.annunciators (if not, you can create one). This file can be edited via the UI window or you can also manually edit the file, maybe with Excel and save it as a .csv format.

It has the following format:

IMPORTANT: Leave the first line in place

x,y,width,height,toptext,bottomtext,textsize,toptext y,bottomtext y,dataref,value,color

description
xx position (in pixels) of top left position of annunciator in relation to the window.
yy position (in pixels) of top left position of annunciator in relation to the window.
widthwidth of the annunciator (in pixels)
heightheight of annunciator (in pixels)
toptextText to show on top line of the annunciator
bottomtextText to show on the bottom line of annunciator, if none, use value null
textsizeSize of the text (in pixels)
toptext yy position (in pixels) of the top text in relation to the annunciator (measured from the center of the text)
bottomtext yy position (in pixels) of the bottom text in relation to the annunciator (measured from the center of the text)
datarefdataref for this annunciator
valuevalue of dataref when lit (currently not used, but has to be a number)
colorColor of annunciator, currently supported Colors are RED, AMBER, GREEN
